At the end of 2002, the Royal Dutch Motorriders Association (K.N.M.V.) asked Leon to become Dutch national coach and advisor for the national selection. This concerns a selected group of riders in the categories 65cc, 85cc and MX2.

In the seven years that Leon has worked as national coach he clinched several titles with his riders. In 2008 Jeffrey Herlings won the world title, the European title, the German title and the Dutch title in the 85 class. Davy Pootjes won in the same year the European title in the 65 class. Also in 2008 Donny Bastemeijer and Ceriel Klein Kromhof became vice world champions in the 85 and MX2 Junior class. Ceriel Klein Kromhof rode a strong year in the European Championship MX2. After some podium finishes he finally ended the season in fifth position.

In addition to this program, some extra foreign training camps will be planned, in which possibly some additional riders will perform on invitation of the K.N.M.V. as a part of their talent development, as follows:

The job at the K.N.M.V. however goes further than supporting and coaching the EC selection. As one of his tasks we should also mention his motivating role towards clubs, to at least consider a form of policy concerning youthful riders and their development.

Second issue in this, is the discovery and development of talent. The discovery of talented riders could be done at the club-level, as a part of the youth-policy as mentioned above. Leon can excellently support the youth and their parents, based on his many years of experience as a motocross rider at top level. No one but him could better tell what has to be done on the way to the MX-top.

Over the years Leon has built up a good relationship with national coaches from other countries like Andrea Bartolini and Thomas Traversini. Frequently they are in contact to help the younger riders.
